Thrust 3 of the Phase II Center for Strategic Design of Conjugated Polymers will explore the self-assembly and directed assembly of aggregated conjugated materials into well-defined films with properties tailored for electronic applications. The assembly can be tuned at the atomic level through chemical functionalization in conjunction with extrinsic means such as magnetic or electric field gradients. We will develop a theoretical basis for how intrinsic and extrinsic forces drive chain packing and morphology to allow for strategic design of innovative conjugated polymers.
